Extracting and verifying label information from unknown 3rd party labels.

Summary & Results

Faced with operational inefficiencies from a manual, paper-based inbound process and frequent employee turnover, our client, Cranston Trucking and CH Robinson, sought a digital solution. Implementing Powerhouse AI revolutionized their approach by capturing label information through photographs and converting it into structured data. This allowed for seamless data flow into their Transportation Management System, Navisphere.

The benefits included handling diverse packing slip formats, faster employee onboarding, and significant improvements in productivity and data accuracy, transforming a laborious process into an efficient operation.

Enhanced efficiency of inbound workflow
Automated reading of >100 different packing slips

Challenges

Despite maintaining a well-established operation, Cranston Trucking and CH Robinson faced obstacles due to their outdated paper-based sorting process. Recognizing the need to enhance efficiency and modernize their workflow, they sought a solution.

The conventional process unfolded as follows: Upon delivery, fabric rolls were placed in a sorting area where operators inspected and counted each roll, documenting any discrepancies on paper. Once this phase concluded, the updated count was transferred to the administrative department, which manually entered the data into the Transportation Management System (TMS). This manual input and paper handling not only increased the likelihood of inaccuracies but also slowed the sorting process.

Recognizing these inefficiencies, the client sought an automated, digital solution. Adding to these challenges was a high employee turnover rate, necessitating continuous training. New hires, unfamiliar with company operations and the variety of goods handled, were prone to errors in counting and checking.

Solution

To overcome these operational challenges, we customized the Powerhouse AI application to align with the company's inbound, sorting, and outbound processes.

The enhanced process begins by capturing images of the fabric roll labels. Powerhouse AI swiftly processes these images, converting the information into structured data in real time.

By pulling delivery information and packing slips for outbound deliveries, Cranston Trucking could track inbound and outbound delivery orders in real time while scanning. Once all rolls are captured, the application performs an automatic cross-check with the fabric roll label data.

To ensure real-time data verification and roll count updates, Cranston moved away from manual data entry. Through an API integration developed by Powerhouse AI with CH Robinson’s TMS platform, Navisphere, all data from inbound to outbound roll counts was automatically synchronized, eliminating human error.

Results

With the integration of Powerhouse AI into their warehouse process, the client has moved away from conventional operational methods, resulting in substantial improvements in efficiency and accuracy. The refined process not only simplifies the tasks of counting and checking but also effectively handles nearly 100 different label formats received from various suppliers on fabric rolls.

According to the client, a key advantage of leveraging Powerhouse AI is the expedited onboarding process for new employees. Unlike the traditional system, which required an extensive learning period for newcomers to familiarize themselves with various goods in the warehouse, Powerhouse AI enables quick adaptation and effective contribution. This innovative system allows new team members to immediately participate in operations, significantly boosting productivity and minimizing errors from the outset.
